Identity, memory and concealment are themes that connect much of Graff’s oeuvre. The black box can be seen symbolically as a recording device, relating to what Sigmund Freud described as the Uncanny. In his explanations on the unconscious, Freud maintained that what is concealed is not only hidden from others, but may also be hidden from the self. He likened the uncanny to being robbed of one’s eyes. The black box also relates to methods of media censorship and in the words of the artist, offers ‘a veil of protection for the subjects.’
